Keeping our grass verges in order

In spring 2007 an experiment to protect the grass verges in the village was started by laying load-bearing plastic mesh on a site in George Street.

Approximately 20 metres of verge were protected and the experiment was assessed in 2008. The experiment seems to have achieved the objective of protecting the grassed verge from further erosion by motor vehicles parking in that:
- there has been no further deepening of ruts or holes
- there have been no problems with the mesh being cut up in the mowing operation.
However, the re-growth of grass has been sporadic.

The Parish Council has decided in principle to extend the scheme but is looking into how the cost could be shared with the County Council and the Housing Association.

In any future extension of the scheme we should ensure:
- the existing surface is leveled with topsoil and compacted before the mesh is laid
- over-seeding with grass seed should be reviewed in the September following installation and any bare patches reseeded.
