Stratford Council will now accept more materials in your blue recycling bin. These are PLASTIC FOOD TRAYS, YOGHURT POTS, MARGARINE TUBS, CLEAN TINFOIL. These are in addition to the existing collection of paper, glass bottles, plastic bottles, cardboard and food and drink cans. You should NOT recycle plastic bags or plastic wrapping. You can now mix kitchen waste with your green waste. So one week your kitchen waste will go in your grey bin and the following week in your green bin. However, kitchen waste must not be wrapped in plastic when placed in your green bin, although it can be wrapped in newspaper. All green waste together with kitchen waste will be composted.Your grey bin will be collected every other week.
Your kitchen waste will therefore still be collected weekly, as mentioned above; by one week putting it in your grey bin and the other in your green bin.
Frequently asked questions
Q. Do Bank Holidays change my collection day?
A. No, with the exception of the weeks around Christmas and New Year.
Q. What kitchen waste can I put in my Green Bin?
A. Your Green Bin will take all kitchen waste, which includes cooked and raw:• vegetable peelings• fruit• food scraps• meat and fish including skin and fat• bones• cereals and grains. For these to be composted, please don't wrap them in plastic. Place them loose in your Green Bin with your garden waste or wrap them in paper.
Q. What happens if I need more than one Green Bin for garden and kitchen waste?
A. A chargeable service is available at £40 a year for the collection of each additional bin.
Pleasecontact 01789 260925 for more details or to book this service. Alternatively home composting can be carried out. If green waste is composted without being transported it is better for the environment.
For information on subsidised compost bins from Warwickshire County Council, please call 0845077 0757 or visit: www.warwickshire.gov.uk
Q. How will I get all our waste into our Grey Bin?
A. By concentrating on recycling all that is available through the Blue Lid Bin service of plastic bottles, cardboard, paper, glass bottles and jars, tins and cartons as well as composting kitchen waste in your Green Bin, you will be surprised how much less waste you will be sending to landfill in your Grey Bin. Additional Grey Bins are available to larger families.
Q. What happens to my collection as I'm still on sacks and boxes?
A. Your collection will be the same frequency as the wheeled bin collection - one week will be your rubbish week with sacks and the next your recycling week with boxes and where applicable green sacks. New rubbish sacks will be delivered to residents in April and October.
Q. What about families with babies, what do we do with nappies?
A. This waste cannot be recycled and so will only be accepted in the Grey Bin. You should wrap used nappies securely before disposal. The use of 'Real Nappies' as an alternative to disposable nappies may be beneficial to residents because this will reduce the risk of smell problems with your bin and ensure there is plenty of space in your Grey bin for other non recyclable waste if you use real nappies. For further information contact the Real Cotton Nappies Project at Warwickshire County Council on 01926 412458. Even if you not able to switch completely any reduction in the number of disposable nappies in your Grey Bin will be a help.
Q. What about pet waste?
A. This waste cannot be recycled and so will only be accepted in the Grey Bin. Any alternative arrangements you can make for this waste e.g. a pet toilet buried in your garden (available from pet stores) will help provide you with space in your Grey Bin for other non-recyclable waste.
Confused about what plastic items you can recycle? Most people have understandably got quite confused about which plastics they can recycle (it does seem like a degree level subject).
