News from the Police Authority

Mike Edwards informed the forum of some key points namely:-

• Chief Constable has been promoted to the National Crime Agency and the Deputy,
Andy Parker has taken over
• Changes in May on the policing plan are now in operation and have settled down (the shift
system was a problem to begin with but has now been altered and is a bit more flexible)
• Strategic Alliance is in progress with West Mercia and, although a saving has been made
of £7.5 m on recent cutbacks, a further £3.8 m still has to be found. The main costs are
people
• Burglaries are on the up and this is a national problem. Work is ongoing and there has
been a little bit of a reduction
• Election of a new Crime Commissioner will take place next November 2012

Mike also encouraged the forum to become more aware of the Smartwater scheme and its
effectiveness. Information about the scheme is available via the SNT team and labels for the house
are also available. He further added that a lot of policing comes from local intelligence and the community can feed in re: crimes being solved.
