Operation Crunch
During 2010 the daily burglary rate in Warwickshire was 5.5 a day. This was an extremely low rate and the result of very successful targeting of offenders and working with partners to reduce offending. We are currently experiencing, on average, seven burglaries a day across the county. Whilst statistically the chances of a home being burgled is still very low, seven burglaries a day is seven too many. This means seven households harmed and seven streets or locations put in fear of crime.
We are determined to identify and target, along with partners, the current burglars active in Warwickshire. A relatively small number of criminals are causing a disproportionate amount of harm. We will protect our communities from them using every investigation, enforcement and prevention opportunity. This is the aim of Operation Crunch.
Warwickshire Police is dedicating staff to drive Operation Crunch forward across the county identifying and prosecuting those who burgle people's homes, supported by relevant patrol activity from staff in neighbourhoods and those providing protection both day and night. The help and support of communities and partners working together with us is essential to provide the best protection possible.

BEWARE OF BOGUS CALLERS (DISTRACTION BURGLARIES)
Most people who call at your home will be genuine, but sometimes people will turn up unannounced with the intention of tricking their way into homes. They are known as Distraction Burglars or Bogus Callers whose sole aim is to get into homes to distract people and steal their money or valuables. You should always be particularly careful when someone you do not know calls unexpectedly at your door.
Bogus callers may be smartly dressed and claim to be from the Council, the Police, health organisations or gas, water or electricity companies or even Neighbourhood Watch. The callers may be a man, woman or a child (or a combination of all three) and all are convincing and persuasive. They may ask for a drink of water, or to wash their hands, some may be looking for a lost pet. In fact such callers may use any story.
They often use props such as an identity card or wear overalls bearing a company logo. If you are expecting a caller, remember to check their identification very carefully against the letter you have been sent or the password you have agreed before you let them in.
When someone calls at your door to offer work or for urgent help or the visitor appears to be someone `official', always follow the following procedure:
Keep your front and back doors locked, even when you are at home.
Before you answer, stop and think if you are expecting anyone. Check that you have locked any back doors and taken the keys out. Look through the door viewer or front window to see who it is.
If you decide to open the door, put the door chain or bar on first. Keep the bar or chain on while you are talking to the caller. (Normally, when the door is shut and locked, leave off the bar or chain in case you need to get out in an emergency).
Ask for and carefully check their identity card, even if they have a prearranged appointment. Does the caller look like the person on the card? Is the name the same as the one on your letter? Close the door while you do this. If you are not expecting anyone and an identity card has not been shown, do not let the caller in until you have checked and double checked that the caller is genuine.
If you think that a BOGUS CALLER or DISTRACTION BURGLAR has called at your door, report it immediately to the Police. DIAL 999 and state what happened.
Try to give the Police a description of the person and/or vehicle registration number and while they are on their way, try to tell a neighbour, caretaker or Neighbourhood Watch representative just in case they try other homes in the area.

Warwickshire Police - A New Way of Working
On 12th May 2009 Warwickshire Police will be changing the way it deals with calls from members of the public reporting various matters. Details will be included in your letter regarding next years Council Tax Bill sent out by Stratford District Council.
Emergency Calls will still be dealt with in the same manner i.e. '999' calls - we aim to respond within 10 minutes to urban areas and 20 minutes to rural areas. We would still urge members of the public to ring '999' when crime is in progress or if it is recent and the offenders are still believed to be in the area (usually on foot).
We will still aim to attend 'Priority' incidents within one hour.
However, the way we deal with other incidents will be scheduled for attendance in an innovative way. Members of the public will be able to attend book and attend 'police surgeries' at a police station. An hours slot will be allocated for that purpose and if the slot overruns then a further period can be booked on a future date, presuming other slots for that day may have already been booked. This will allow statements to be taken and this officer will take charge of any subsequent investigation. There will also be a 'Scheduled Attendance Car' which will consist of a an officer attending pre-booked meetings at their home or another convenient location.
It is envisaged that this method will 'free up' the reactive area car from 50% of its current workload and allow officers to focus on incidents that need immediate attendance and make inroads into solving crime.
This MAY mean that we may spend MORE time talking with you as a first point of contact and this MAY mean a longer wait if you are calling Warwickshire Police about a non-emergency matter. It will has a benefit in that more callers will be dealt with at first point of contact and have a clearer picture of what happens from that point onwards.
